Married: Sumer & Chris in Tulum, Mexico! (just a little sneeky peeky!)

When Sumer asked me if we wanted to photograph their destination wedding elopement in Tulum, Mexico, it was beyond a no-brainer. I mean, its moments like these that I love my job, and not just because we were out on the Mayan Riviera at the Dreams Tulum Resort Mexico, under perfect skies, overlooking the clear Carribean waters…but because watching Sumer and Chris say their vows rivaled every bit of the backdrop they had chosen for that day. Every couple has their own spirit, not hers and his, but THEIRS..and their spirit is SO incredibly sweet. Its completely pure, totally genuine, and just being around them is like somebody sprinkling lovey dovey fairy dust, and we’re all left smiling. This is just a taste of some of the fun we had running around the beach and resort, there are so many shots that I am in love with from this destination wedding, I’m struggling to not put 4,353 pictures up for your viewing pleasure, for real. A feast for the eyes, and while we’re all longing for summer, its definitely a big fat splash of beach, sunshine, and tropical vacation right in the middle of our Spring Fever! Sumer & Chris, we loved shooting your destination wedding and elopement in Tulum, Mexico…but more importantly, we loved spending this time with you, and with your closest family and friends, we were beyond honored and felt completely brought into the fold of your group. Stories from Cancun, Mexico – Immigration and Entry

It was March 4th @ 0530. Our day started. It was early. All the cameras, all the equipment, and clothing, had been packed with care. We left early. Ready to start our trip. With a spring in our step. Talking about what kind of breakfast we would have at the airport with time to read the paper which we of course had time to grab off the front porch. We pulled into DFW North, grabbed the shuttle, and made our way to the terminal. Only to have trouble getting our ticket to pull up at the kiosk. A lady with Continental asked if she could assist us. And she did. Only to inform us we were at the wrong airport. We wanted Dallas – DAL NOT Dallas – DFW. So back out to the shuttles. We found one just as we were running down the escalator. It just so happened to be the same driver that dropped us off. He was obviously curious as to why we wished to go back out to the parking lot, and we informed him we were at the wrong airport. “How does that happen?” he asked. We were curious about that ourselves but we were pretty sure we were to blame. It’s about 8:30 or so now and it’s getting to be time for Dallas rush hour to be in full swing and as any Dallas wedding photographer knows the highways are nothing to be trifled with you need to build in time, which we were running preciously short of.

Nevertheless, we made it to Dallas – DAL (or Lovefield) again with time to spare and time to pick up a Cinnabon and to finally laugh at how we almost thought about sleeping in a little extra because we didn’t want to sit around at the airport for hours, which as it turned out, wasn’t going to be a problem we were having. At least, not in Dallas.

We made our connecting flight in Houston with ease. Dutifully filled out our immigration and declaration forms ready to breeze through customs and relax on our shuttle out to paradise at Dream’s Resort Tulum, Mexico. We deplaned in Cancun and we’re presented with a somewhat long line for immigration, but nothing too unmanageable. That is until…we finished with that line and went down stairs to which we were met with…

…this picture was taken 3 hours later near the end of the line of which we made many friends as we talked about our fate and how we thought this moment would never occur, but it was actually happening, we were going to have the privilege of talking with an immigration agent.

Then it was onto customs, and then we were out the door to pick up the shuttle to the resort. They even had a bar outside, which later, we all determined the bar needed to be at the beginning of the line and not the end.

Needless to say, getting to Mexico was an adventure, but as you’ll see in a couple of days it was well worth the wait. Also, upon review we discovered the bride’s two sisters are in the crowd and later you’ll be able to play “Where’s Waldo?” when we show off the sneak peak for Sumer and Chris and their Tulum, Mexico wedding!

Book Reviews: The E-Myth Revisited

The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber is written for the small business owner that is in way over their head. We were introduced to this book from a workshop hosted by Justin and Mary Marantz on their Spread the Love tour. The book slowly breaks the reader into the fact that the reader is not just a business owner, but that the reader holds many more jobs that just owner.

Starting off with three distinct job titles, Technician, Manager, and Entrepreneur the book begins to verbally lambaste Technicians for not engaging their Manager and Entrepreneur selves. It is also here where the author starts to introduce us to his version of a business spirituality. That the Entrepreneur is above all and is the future spiritual selves we all seek. It’s here we are also told, that you are working too hard, there is a better way, and if you weren’t being such a Technician with your head cut off you’d be happier and would escape your ultimate fate of the owner of a failed business.

Once you reach escape velocity of planet technician and see that what you need to be is an architect of your business, an Entrepreneur, then the author opens the door to more job titles. The Entrepreneur we are told transcends menial work, he delegates tasks, he sculpts a business out of cogs and rigorous processes, so that any one off the street can be put into place to fulfill any task. It reminds me of the philosophy mentioned in The Caine Mutiny where the lead character tell us that the only way to survive the Navy is to go numb and not think about anything, because if you think about what it is you are doing, you’ll go insane…but if you just do it without thinking that the process will guide you through it and soon you will be done with whatever menial repetitive task was asked of you. Further, “The Navy is a master plan, designed by geniuses, for execution by idiots.” and so too should your business be.

The book also takes us through several tales. One of a shop owner, who bakes pies, who is suffering from being a Technician. To the giants of the business franchise industry, like McDonald’s, and FedEx. To a heartwarming tale of the best hotel the author ever stayed at. Through this whirlwind, you’ll go back and forth between a shop owner who remembers being a little girl and not having anything to do but lay in fields and dream, to the author saying “Exactly. You need to not be a Technician, you need to get busy and do these other 6 or 7 or so jobs.” The disconnect between the two seems palpable, but to work 6 or 7 or so more jobs is the prescription for how the pie shop owner is to get out of the misery and drudgery that is the business that demands more and more of her time, life, and health.

Now, I have some experience to lend to what the author is recommending and you can decide whether or not this is the elixir for what ails your business, and for most reading this that will be a photography business. When the author says to write and proceduralize your business, this is no small order or task, especially when the comparison is often loosely made with the masters of franchise, McDonald’s. Having worked at McDonald’s when I was young lad, I can tell you that it’s no small thing to create an operations manual. Every McDonald’s indeed has such a manual, but the level of detail is vast, and it is indeed meant to be executed idiots, managed by lesser idiots, and owned by those who can appreciate the turn-key nature of the McDonald’s franchise and can rustle up a cool million and a half.

So just so you are clear, what you need to do, or start doing, in addition to all the things you have to do now, is to sit down. Then? Start drawing up why your business does what it does like no one else does and how it is you do it, and further, how you expect someone who walks in off the street to do it just like you do. This is a level of organization that is beyond hyper organized, you very nearly to be an ISO 9000 document writer too, in addition to President, VP of Sales, VP of Marketing, CEO, COO, CFO, CTO, CPA, secretary, janitor, and photographer.

In short? You need to hire people and tell them what to do and how to do it. You’re quite literally insane if you try to do all of the jobs required. However, you can also get this advice if you go down to your local SBA. They have experienced small business owners who will help you through these things. They are there to help you. Guess what their advice is? “Hire someone to do that.” In fact, every question can and will be answered with “Hire someone to do that.”

The moral of the stories and book? If you aren’t “Hiring someone to do that.” or “Preparing to hire someone to do that.” you can just forget it. Your business will never grow to what you need it to be. Which is something you can walk away from and/or enjoy the profits from. If you were to disappear and thus your business would disappear? You aren’t a business you are a one man band…marching off a cliff. Or so we are told…

The book also ends on a newage-esque note of that profits and the business you run is the spirit you’ve been searching for all along. That sense of security and self you’ve been longing for is out there….waiting…seize it….it’s yours! All you have to do is run towards your future self if you would just let yourself. I am continually amazed, by those, who could easily fulfill this need by merely seeking Christ find every increasingly unique ways to do it…that somehow never satisfy…that leave you hungry. If you’re still hungry and can’t be satisfied might I recommend picking up a Bible instead of or in addition to this book.

Personally, I found some of the thoughts intriguing. I felt some of the scenarios eerily similar to our own and I also found some of the scenarios nothing like ours and the advice outright condescending. This book is a worthwhile book to read, but gloss over the business spirituality and the things that don’t apply to you, and you should be fine.

Obviously.

If you want more books that are of along the same lines of master plans designed by geniuses, I’d like to recommend the book “Built to Last”.

I give this book 3.8 stars out of 5.

Vendor Spotlight: The Magnolia Hotel in Dallas, Texas

Dallas wedding photography is as varied as the couple, the venue, the vendors, and the photographers, and you can see a place 100X around here, yet find something new about it each and every time…and so was the case when we shot a wedding last weekend at The Magnolia Hotel in Dallas. As it goes, most weddings have their little hiccups here and there, bumps in the road, but what a gloriously beautiful road this ended up being! Tiffany & D’Anders picked an absolutely gorgeous Dallas wedding venue, and the coordinator at The Magnolia Hotel, Jessica Smith, was amazing. She had every single detail under control, watched over the whole evening with a careful, attentive eye, and was gracious and kind as well. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Jessica and the staff. It was a pleasure to be the chosen wedding photographers at The Magnolia Hotel in Dallas, and most especially for such a sweet, kind couple like Tiffany and D’Anders! And here is just one single little peeky-peeky into their wedding. A bigger sneak peek to come!

Engaged: Chris & Sumer (sneak peek!)

Last week, God put a great big white blanket over our state, specifically in our area. TWELVE inches of snow…setting a record around here. And all I could think about was how amazing it would be to capture a couple in this rare, beautiful moment in time. And, Chris and Sumer being spontaneous and fun loving, moved up their engagement shoot to let me play in the snow with them!! I texted her a few days before, and she said “IF” we actually got snow, and IF Chris was off in time…YEAH! And, all the “IF’s” fell into place. The location was perfect in that, it was their backyard. They have the most beautiful property, and we had such a fantastic time with all that white stuff! Chris and Sumer ooze engaged bliss, and believe me, the kissing was completely undirected, they most definitely did not need encouragement from me! They have the cutest energy between them, and we are SO excited to be shooting their upcoming wedding at the gorgeous Dreams Resort Tulum in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico! Engagement pictures in the snow, and wedding pictures in the sand and beautiful water…definitely one-of-a-kind! Congratulations Sumer & Chris!! We are SO excited to be part of this adventure with you guys, to catch up after all these years Sumer, and to spend this precious moment in time hangin’ with the two of you!

Bob here. So every now and then I have the opportunity to join and assist Treva during her photo shoots. This time I was to take pictures of Treva while she was doing her thing. Now as you will see, she is most definitely the most beautiful woman in the world. I love every moment I have with Treva. She is a wonderful mother, a loving wife, an amazing woman, and a gifted photographer. I am constantly amazed at her work. What to know something silly? I foolishly taught her how to use _MY_ camera…and look what she went and did with it? I am totally proud of Treva and everything she has been able to accomplish. I am blessed to have her in my life and I know she is a blessing in the lives of others. So here I offer my view through the lens of how I see her…

Yes, its an uber cheezy holiday, but I love love. I’m a hopeless romantic, and not in the flowers and chocolates way…ok, maybe chocolates. Godiva…yuuuumm! I’m a hopeless romantic because I really do believe in Agape love. I have it, I am blessed by it, my husband is truly everything I think God meant for a man to be for his wife. And its why I absolutely love what I do. I get to witness Agape love in others…its beautiful, intense, amazing….like when I caught Corey just staring and smiling at Sarah during the prayer while her eyes were closed. Or when I saw Blake clasp Amy’s hand just to remind her how happy he was to be standing there in front of all their friends and family, vowing forever to her. Or when Wes turned into the happiest, smiliest groom ever once Stacie said I DO!

And the rest? Philia, the love between friends? How easy it is to witness it, when a find bridesmaids on the floor in their dresses and heels, carefully steaming the wedding dress train before they oh-so carefully help the bride slip it on, or a look between the groom and his best man as the ring is gently passed from his hand, the laughs, the tears, oh how beautiful this love is to witness!

And Storge love, you say? Again, the love between families is ever present and more often than not, brings tears to my eyes. A sister watching the the Bride coming down the aisle to her beloved, a father as he passes his sweet little girls hand into the hand of the man about to be her husband, a grandfather’s all encompassing hug, holding HIS baby close and remembering her little voice, and reading books as she sat on his lap. Mothers, holding their sons for that final dance, knowing her baby boy belongs to another woman now, yet remembering those little bear hugs and a sweet, small hand slipped into her own on a walk in the park. What a blessing to capture all of this love, in one moment, in one day, for a lifetime of memories!

So, on this Valentine’s Day, while its more than permissible to enjoy flowers and candy, and Godiva, I am not only thankful for my own personal Agape, Philia, and Storge…but that I have shared in yours. That I have seen your beautiful love, if only for a day, but it has inspired me for a lifetime! And now I’m going to share some of those moments with you… Happy Valentine’s Day!

He forced me, really. Ok, I’ll really fess up. After attending the ever fabulous Spread The Love Workshop held by Justin and Mary Marantz, they convinced me, or us, that I needed to give you my beloved internet readers a genuine description of ME. This should be easy, but when you start thinking about the things that make up who you are, one begins to worry it will come off egotistical, or overly self-deprecating, or goofy, maybe a little (lot) LAME! So, after putting it off, my sweetie pie husband sat down and wrote one up for me. Seriously. I was concerned. I crept up behind him, not wanting to look, but needing to look…and when I read the list he typed up, I had honest-to-goodness tears in my eyes! He gets me! I mean, I knew he got me, but he REALLY GETS ME! So, in getting me, he did a better job then I would have, and I thought I should share..because in some way we’re all a little alike. A little afraid of what others will think of us, not always sure of our place in the big scheme of things, but we are known, loved, cherished, and the ultimate sacrifice was made for us, thank you Lord! And sometimes, He sends someone who “gets us”. Yay!

So here we go….

I proudly and humbly claim that I am Christian.

I am the mother to approximately 10 kids.

I was born and raised in Texas.

I like mildly scary movies and absolutely hate very scary movies.

I build an outfit around my Uggs instead of my shoes around an outfit.

I have a love hate relationship with my iPhone.

I actually considered selling my camera instead of starting a photography business.

I still cry at weddings.

I then edit the photos and I cry again and it’s ridiculous because it’s not even my life.

I love Starbucks peppermint mochas.

I love the Fall.

I got engaged on the top of a bridge in the middle of a lightning storm.

I eloped.

I wish I had hired a photographer.

Haus of Photography Workshop – Treva Tribit Photography

So, we’re a little late on this, but it needs blogging none the less! In October we had our FIRST ever Haus of Photography Workshop for Treva Tribit Photography. Haus of Photography is the brand we are using for anything and everything marketed toward fellow photographers in the biz, as well as a fun new place that just our brides and grooms will have access to…but that is in the works and coming later this year. In the meantime, we were SO extremely excited to host our first workshop, and regardless of the COLD, our model (Jenna Touchberry, and up and coming make-up artist) was a real trooper letting our group photograph her while she stood there freezing…she’s so good you can’t even tell!! We had a nice turn-out, and afterwards we’ve seen the attendees really take their newly learned skills to the next level and start up their own businesses. This is a workshop that teaches you EVERYTHING you need to know to start your own successful photography business..not just a feel-good, self-help type of event. So often, we are asked the base level, need-to-know questions that are hard-learned when others in the industry aren’t as open to sharing the information that really got their business off the ground. We are an open book!! So, if you are interested in starting your own photography business, and you want to know it ALL, ask questions, and leave feeling like you are truly prepared….let us know, we’re going to hold another workshop this Spring! Thanks to all our fellow photogs who came out, we’re watching for the greatness you will surely bring to this fabulous industry!

Vendor Spotlight: Fabulous hair designer~Heather Roundy!

I met up with hair design extraordinaire Heather Roundy (ok, so she was doing my hair, I admit it) and asked her the burning questions most brides and wedding vendors ask. Heather does an amazing job on everything she does in her field, but she has a special knack for gorgeous styling, which makes her amazing for brides and the bridal party, moms, grandma’s…the day of a wedding. She travels to the venue, rocks out the updo’s, downdo’s, curlydo’s (I don’t profess to know all the fancy hairstylist terms, friends), but I do know when my she has styled the bride’s I’m shooting, they look MARVELOUS! Heather is considered one of the top designers in the DFW area, particularly in wedding hair design.

1. Where do you work? Peyton Thomas Salon in Soutlake, TX. LOVE my manager, and the ladies I work around. Its a fantastic company! (Phone #: 817-748-2103)

2. How many years have you been a hair styliest and designer? 10 years, and 2 1/2 of those I taught and am a licensed instructor. I graduated from Ogle Beauty Academy.

3. What inspires and gives you energy? My daughter Aliva, I do everything I do to make her life better. Professionally, I’m inspired when a client returns because they really liked my work on their hair. Also when a client asks me to do something bizarre and crazy, and it turns out extraordinary, totally energizes me!

4. What do you like about wedding hair design? Its what inspired me to be a stylist in the first place! My passion is specifically for those special moments when the entire day is about my client, achieving perfection for my client, drives me.

4. How long did you aspire to be a hair styliest/designer? Since I was little bitty, and started doing my parents hair in bows and and little barrettes…whatever I could use, on whoever would let me!

5. Where do you ultimately see your business? I see myself taking advantage of every opportunity that arises, and as long as I’m making people happy, I feel I’m doing exactly what I should be! I love where I’m at, and I’m excited for what is ahead for myself and my clients!
